A Black Yard Art Original is a unique hand made piece of durable outdoor artwork, created through an intricate 49 hour process. The Black Yard Art journey starts in Jamaica and ends in Oakland, California.

Olric Carter, Jamaican native and 30 year Oakland resident went shopping for outdoor art, to decorate his yard and complement his garden, after landscaping the backyard of his home. He found largely Greco/Roman yard art and after a long search, the closest Black themed outdoor art available was Egyptian.

Not to be deterred, he contacted his old friend, Richard Atkinson, a Jamaican acclaimed master in Papier Mache art whose work has won several medals throughout Jamaica and the Caribbean. In Richard’s own words his expression through the Papier Mache medium is a way of telling stories about people, relaying optimism, introspection, innocence, wisdom, grace and complexity using the language of sculpture.

Atkinson creates the Papier Mache pieces in Jamaica and exports them to Olric in Oakland. The pieces are then designed, replicated and hand painted for outdoor use.

The result is, Black Yard Art, a beautiful, durable outdoor masterpiece suitable for any garden and designed to last a lifetime. Thank you for your interest in a Black Yard Art Original.
